Discovering My Niche

What is my medium, style, and services of choice?
One of my strongest areas of design is the research that drives design decisions, I really enjoy gathering information, seeking out answers to design questions, conducting interviews and group brainstorm sessions, etc.

Target clients and potential partners?
I want my clients to be companies that are seeking more efficient ways to conduct their businesses, ways to enhance work communities for employees, ways to improve the welfare of the public. At some point in the future, it would be amazing to partner with Krukow Design, Nudge Denver, Ogilvy, and other design research focused firms.

Problems to solve

- Improving employee functionality within companies
     - This would involve lots of interviews with employees, lots of qualitative and quantitative research on how employees face different parts of their job, it would be very satisfying to pull all of that information together, validating the need for improvement in some area of their work, and then strategize how to make that improvement possible.
- Making public environments safer or more friendly feeling
     - There is such a need for improvement in public places, currently in many cities there is an unwelcome and unsafe feeling in most of the public areas that people need to occupy to get to and from work, travel, take their lunch breaks, etc. There is feeling of being rushed and lots of uncomfortable friction. If theses spaces were altered to offer more of a peaceful, enjoyable, leisurely feeling, overall morale of the public would improve therefore improving overall performance of individuals in their professional and personal lives
- Encourage behavior that improves public ideals and promotes better choices
    - Similar to the need of improvement in public places, the guidelines that influence the public to make choices, like stop signs, speed limit indicators, public signage, don't seem to positively influence the publics choices (lots of people ignore the speed limit), and even common public sentiments like driving under the influence could use some direction and guiding towards better choices for people to make not only for themselves, but for others as well.

Research Question

How can utilizing design research methodologies (user interviews, surveys, and behavior tracking) prove that design can help users take advantage of intrinsic motivation for behavioral change rather than extrinsic motivation? This question still needs refinement, but it's where I'm starting from. What I would like to achieve: 1. Validate the need for a platform (whatever I end up proposing to be designed) to help people more easily take advantage of personal motivation to change their habits versus external motivation 2. Find a platform that makes the most sense to offer people to help themselves in the best way. 3. Make changing your habits a more personally fulfilling process because you, the user, will be key in helping yourself. Body Image Thought Map and Research

Based off of my improved research question:  How can experiential design concepts help young women in their 20's use behavioral modification to improve their perception of their body image? I decided to create a thought map to kickstart the next phase of my research process. Based off of the trends I saw, there are two main components in each trend that I will further research as they relate to body image in young women in their 20's. Two of the three trends have to do with outside influences, but according to research concerning self talk and thought process, internal views and perspectives hold more weight, even though internal views and perspectives can be heavily influenced by external sources.
